Williams out to “destroy” Page

Betfred World Snooker Championship Odds: Williams eases into second round

Mark Williams has spoken of his admiration for fellow Welshman Jackson Page but says he will be out to “destroy” the world number 90 when they meet at the Betfred World Snooker Championship (Page 9/2, Williams 2/13 – Match Result).

Williams booked his place in the second round of the competition at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield after a convincing 10-3 win over countryman Michael White.

The three-time world champion is now on a collision course with Page, who he has described as his “fourth son”.

Page booked his place in the second round thanks to an impressive 10-7 win over ninth seed Barry Hawkins.

Williams says he will be going all out to beat Page when they meet on Thursday but if he was to lose to anyone it would be the 20-year-old.

“That will be interesting, it will be tough,” Williams said. “He is not a friend, he is more my fourth son. He comes to my house to play cards, for pizza with my [three] kids, golf, badminton, you name it, we do it together. Unless he blanks me for the next two days we will get something to eat tonight.

“I want to destroy him, that is no question but if I am going to lose to anybody and had to pick, it would be him. I will try my best to win but if I lose I will have no problem at all. If it means he gets into the top 64 by beating me then I am half on his side anyway.”

There are plenty of other matches to look forward to on Tuesday from the Betfred World Snooker Championship, with tournament favourite Neil Robertson also in action.

The Australian came from behind to lead world number 77 Ashley Hugill 6-3 going into the morning’s session.

Yan Bingtao and Chris Wakelin also have an early start on Tuesday, while there is action in the afternoon with John Higgins taking on Thepchaiya Un-Nooh (Higgins 2/9, Un-Nooh 16/5 – Match Result) and Stuart Bingham looking to build on his lead against Lu Haotian (Bingham 1/22, Haotin 12/1 – Match Result).

In the evening session Jack Lisowski goes head to head with Matthew Stevens for a place in the next round (Lisowski 8/15, Stevens 6/4 – Match Result).
