Tuchel admits Real task is “almost impossible”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says his Chelsea side can “dream” of advancing through to the semi-finals of the Champions League (Outright 20/1) but concedes it is very unlikely.

The Blues are aiming to defend their European crown after defeating Manchester City in last year’s final.

However, they face an uphill battle heading into the second leg of their quarter-final against Real Madrid (To qualify for semis – Real Madrid 1/14, Chelsea 13/2) at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos took a 3-1 lead from Stamford Bridge and will have home advantage on Tuesday as they look to book their place in the last four.

Striker Karim Benzema was in imperious form in London, netting a hat-trick with Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy making a blunder for the third goal.

Real have a fearsome home record this season, losing only twice at home in all competitions. They were battered 4-0 by Barcelona in La Liga last month while Moldovan minnows Sheriff Tiraspol stunned them 2-1 in the group stages.

However, when speaking to reporters prior to the trip to Spain, Tuchel said that his group were still hopeful despite qualification looking beyond them (Match Betting – Real Madrid 29/20, Draw 13/5, Chelsea 9/5).

“It is one of the biggest challenges to perform away at the Bernabeu,” said the German.

“It is even more difficult if you have to earn a certain result, if you need to win with a minimum of two goals or better or maybe a three-goal difference. That makes it almost impossible and very, very difficult, but still it is worth trying.

“We need nothing else than a fantastic script that we want to be able to overcome this.”

Chelsea will be without striker Romelu Lukaku who has recovered after missing Saturday’s 6-0 thumping of Southampton with an Achilles injury but Cesar Azpilicueta returns to the squad following a bout of Covid.
