Top 4 Queensland Horses Of All Time

Top 4 Queensland Horses Of All Time

The Winter Carnival is over, with all the features run and won.

The locals did a terrific job, jagging the Oaks, the Kingsford-Smith, the Tiara and the Stradbroke (we’ll count Alligator Blood as a Queenslander).

So, it got us thinking, who is Queensland’s best ever horse?

Let’s take a look at the contenders.

Buffering

This bold on-pace sprinter was bought for just $22k and went on to win more than $7m for his owners!

In a career that saw him race 55 times he won 20 starts including 6 Group 1’s, one of which was the 2016 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai.

Trained by Rob Heathcote, this fella was a key player in that golden era of Australian sprinters which included Sepoy, Hay List and of course, Black Caviar.

Bernborough

Well and truly before our time, but Bernborough’s feats on the track were so mighty that they are still being discussed today.

Winning 26 races in his illustrious career (with a streak of 15 in there), the stallion won the Doomben 10,000 and the Doomben Cup carrying huge weights.

His career finished just after the second world war, and he was an inaugural inductee into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2001.

Strawberry Road

After winning 5 Group 1’s in 1983, culminating in a Cox Plate (there was also a Manikato victory in there), Strawberry Road took his talents overseas and contested some of the world’s biggest races in France, the USA, Germany and Japan.

How about being awarded Australian Racehorse of the Year in 1983 and then German Champion Horse in 1984?

Gunsynd

The Goondiwindi Grey! This gem of a horse was bought for just $1,300 back in the 60s but would go on to win more than $280,000.

That may not seem like much, but if you take note of inflation, and the huge increase in prize money over the last few decades, if Gunsynd was racing today his career earnings would probably be over 8 figures.

This guy absolutely loved the mile, winning the Epsom, Toorak, Cantala and the Doncaster. Chuck a 1972 Cox Plate victory in there and you have a special, special horse.

Honourable Mentions

Can’t go without mentioning Vo Rogue, Gold Edition and Tails. We reckon there could be another guy add his name to this list once his career is all said and done. Hint, his name is Incentivise.

Who do you think tops the list?
