Tigers snatch Mellor from rivals Leeds

Castleford Tigers (25/1 Grand Final Winner) have confirmed they have signed forward Alex Mellor from Betfred Super League rivals Leeds Rhinos (33/1) on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Mellor’s future has been up in the air for several months, and the 27-year-old has decided to move on after two years at Headingley.

The former Bradford Bulls ace made a name for himself at the highest level when playing for Huddersfield Giants between 2017-19. His form for the Giants earned him a move to Leeds, but injuries and competition for places meant he has only played 22 times for the Rhinos.

Mellor won the Challenge Cup during his first year with Leeds, but says he now cannot wait to start a fresh challenge.

He told the Castleford club website: “It feels good; it’s been a bit of a long process getting things sorted, so to finally have it all figured out is a good feeling.

“Back-row suits my play style; I think I’m a bloke who is going to put his head down and work hard for you, come up with some plays when I need to but put the team first and do every little thing I can to make the team better.

“It’s good to be a part of it; you look at some of the signings that we’ve made and the prospects we’ve got for next year, it is really exciting. It is not one of those places that you come and aim for mid-table; this is one of those places where we want to be up the table and push. Looking at the signings and the squad we’re building, it’s definitely something we can do.”

Castleford boss Lee Radford (pictured) could throw Mellor straight into the mix this weekend, with the Tigers hosting Catalans Dragons on Sunday afternoon (Tigers 11/10, Draw 22/1, Catalans 8/11 – Match Betting).

Mellor may not be the only player on the move this week, with Hull FC boss Brett Hodgson confirming that half-back Josh Reynolds will leave the club with immediate effect.

The former Wests Tigers star has only made 25 appearances since his move in 2021, and he will be looking for a new club before the end of the week, according to the Black and Whites coach.
