Smith calls on Leeds to impose themselves

Giants and Warriors giving little away

Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith insists his side will not go “into their shell” as they travel to Huddersfield Giants for a West Yorkshire derby on Friday evening (Match Betting – Huddersfield Giants 4/7, Leeds Rhinos 8/5, tie 20/1).

After losing at Salford Red Devils in Smith’s first game in charge, the Rhinos have won each of their last two.

Leeds downed Wakefield Trinity 24-6 at Headingley before last week pulling off a very impressive 40-4 win at Warrington Wolves.

The Warrington win in particular showcased some high-quality rugby and was the first glimpse of just how Smith’s side will play going into the future.

However, Friday will prove to be a tough test against the Challenge Cup runners up with Huddersfield having enjoyed an excellent season so far.

Ian Watson’s (pictured) side have built a reputation for being very tough and organised and they recovered well from the Cup defeat by beating Catalans Dragons away last week.

However, Smith – whose side welcome back the injured duo Harry Newman and Alex Mellor to their squad – insists the Rhinos will try to assert themselves and play their own rugby.

“These guys understand that it takes hard work to get the results. We’re looking forward to a grinding battle,” Smith said.

“We’re not going to go into our shell; we’re going to play what we want to play.

“They are clearly a strong team, well-coached, they play with good teamwork and it looks like there’s a great deal of belief.”

Friday’s other Super League game sees Challenge Cup winners Wigan Warriors go to Salford Red Devils (Match Betting – Salford Red Devils 9/4, Wigan Warriors 4/11, tie 20/1) knowing that a win could potentially push them up to second.

Wigan were 32-12 winners at Castleford Tigers last week and face a Salford side who were thrashed 43-16 by Hull KR on Sunday.
