Scaloni taking Wembley contest seriously

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni says his side are motivated and ready for Wednesday’s “Finalissima” contest against Italy at Wembley (Italy 12/5, Draw 21/10, Argentina 11/8 – Match Odds).

European champions Italy will take on their South American counterparts Argentina (9/1 – World Cup 2022 Outright) in the third edition of the ‘Cup of Champions’ match, which sees the European Championship and Copa America winners collide.

The previous two editions of the event took place in 1985 and 1993, but both sides seem to be taking it seriously enough ahead of kick-off.

Italy centre-back Giorgio Chiellini will make his last appearance for the Azzurri, while coach Roberto Mancini will use the clash as a yardstick as his team try to rebuild after failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

While it is not considered a major trophy, Scaloni claims his troops have “trained like never before” as they try to add more silverware to the cabinet ahead of this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

He told reporters: “Of course, we would like to win because it’s a trophy at stake. The most important thing is our target, which is between now and November and which involves continuing to develop our game.

“We’ve trained like never before. The last time we had a full week was possibly before the Copa America, and I don’t think that was even seven days, so it’s possibly the period of the most training sessions with the national team for me, and I hope we’ve got the most out of it.

“You have to look at how much the players have played, particularly at the end of the season. We’ve made a few tweaks, repeated the things we’ve been doing well and tried to improve them and, of course, worked on the areas for improvement.”

Mancini will be without Domenico Berardi, Andrea Pinamonti, Federico Chiesa, Ciro Immobile, Gaetano Castrovilli and Rafael Toloi.

As for Argentina, they have no injury woes of their own, with Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi (5/4 to score anytime) set to lead the line alongside Angel Di Maria and Lautaro Martinez.
