Premier League Odds: Liverpool lay down title marker

Klopp staying grounded despite Wembley win

Liverpool (5/2 Premier League Outright) laid down an early marker in the 2022/23 Premier League title race as they beat Manchester City 3-1 in the Community Shield at the King Power Stadium.

The FA Cup winners narrowly missed out on the title last season, with Pep Guardiola’s side (4/7 favs Premier League Outright) winning by a single point.

Although the Community Shield is a traditional curtain raiser for the start of the new Premier League campaign, Jurgen Klopp’s men will have been delighted to get one over their rivals ahead of the new season.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the scoring in the 21st minute when his curling drive took a slight deflection of Nathan Ake before going in off the post after beating Ederson.

City took a while to get going and did not equalise until the 70th minute when Julian Alvarez’s goal was eventually awarded after a lengthy VAR check.

In the closing minutes, Liverpool took control, though, with the Reds awarded a penalty when referee Craig Pawson adjudged that Ruben Dias handled the ball inside the area.

Mohamed Salah beat Ederson from the spot before Darwin Nunez sealed the victory in stoppage time to ensure Liverpool got off to the perfect start this season.

Nunez has been criticised for some of his displays during pre-season, but Alexander-Arnold suggested that it was his contribution that got his team over the line.

He told ITV Sport: “This one means a lot as it’s the third time we’ve been in it. Our season started today, and it was important for us to get off on the right foot.”

When asked about Nunez’s contribution, he added: “It has got to be up there. He won the penalty, scored a goal and looked very lively. He’s been bought in to score goals, and he’s proved he can do that today.

“He’s a top player, a young player who is willing to learn. He’s bonded well with the lads. He came on with a point to prove.

“Who knows what will happen over the course of the season? Our aim is to be as fit as possible to push them from the very first kick. This was the perfect start, and we hope to win trophies along the way.”

While Nunez (14/1  – Premier League Top Goalscorer) opened his account, Erling Haaland (11/4) missed a glorious chance in the final few minutes, although he showed glimpses of what he could offer the Citizens this season.
