Nadal sets sights on SW19 Betfred Blog

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal (15/2 2022 Wimbledon Outright) has expressed a desire to play at Wimbledon after undergoing treatment for his chronic foot problem.

The 36-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to 2022, winning the Australian Open and French Open titles to extend his overall Grand Slam record to 22 victories.

Nadal was last seen defeating Casper Ruud in straight sets to seal a record-extending 14th crown at Roland Garros, although he required multiple injections in his foot to get through the competition.

The world number four has since undergone radiofrequency ablation treatment since returning to Mallorca from Paris as he attempts to get ready for Wimbledon.

It appears the issue has eased slightly ahead of the grass Grand Slam, which gets underway on June 27, and Nadal is feeling much more positive.

“My intention is to play at Wimbledon,” Nadal said at a press conference in Mallorca.

“The treatment and the last week of training tells me there is a chance. I will travel to London on Monday, play an exhibition at Hurlingham and do a week of training to see if it’s possible.”

“I’m happy, I haven’t been limping for a week.”

Nadal made it through to the semi-finals when last appearing at Wimbledon in 2019. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, while he opted to skip the 2021 edition to rest after losing to Novak Djokovic (5/6 2022 Wimbledon Outright) in the French Open semi-finals.

“I haven’t played on grass for three years and I have to adapt,” Nadal added.

“Every day I have been recovering sensations and feeling better. I have a week left before playing and I have to test myself little by little.”
