McIlroy boosted for US Open bid

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy managed to hold off Justin Thomas and Tony Finau to successfully defend his RBC Canadian Open crown, just a week ahead of the US Open (McIlroy to win US Open 10/1 – outright).

The world number three birdied eight of his opening 12 holes, but then threw away a three-shot lead at Royal George’s Golf and Country Club, before managing to regain his composure in time to secure his 21st PGA Tour title.

McIlroy birdied his final two holes to finish with an eight-under 62, ending the week on 19-under par. The 33-year-old has now won his second title of the campaign, while he defended a title for the first time in his career.

Finau finished second on 17-under par, while Thomas (To win US Open 12/1 – outright) settled for third, two shots further back. Justin Rose (55/1) and Sam Burns finished tied fourth, while Corey Conners secured sixth on 12-under par.

By winning on Sunday, McIlroy surpassed Greg Norman on the PGA Tour’s all-time victory list, and he added beating him was extra motivation.

He has already his attention to next week’s US Open, which takes place at The Country Club in Brookline, Boston.

When asked about his prospects, McIlroy told Sky Sports: “It was really cool to be a part of and just really happy to get the win today and obviously sets me up well going into next week in Boston.

“I think that it’s not as if I win here, and then we’re going to like Erin Hills or somewhere like that where it’s completely different. It’s a similar style of golf, and it will probably be a similar setup in some ways.

“I would imagine the greens next week will be a little firmer if they get the weather they want to, but overall I thought it was a great week to prepare for the US Open.

“There’s no better way to prepare yourself for tournament golf than to be in contention, having to hit the shots when you need to. I proved this week that I can do that and hopefully get myself back into position to have to do that again next week.”
