Inspiral strikes gold in Coronation Stakes

Baaeed strolls to easy win on first day

Jockey Frankie Dettori admitted steering Inspiral (12/1 St Leger Stakes) to victory in Friday’s Coronation Stakes was “very special”, earning his first triumph of the week at Royal Ascot.

Inspiral, making her first start in 252 days, was thrust out of the gates by the veteran jockey and she produced a breathtaking run to come home ahead of second-placed Spendarella, while Discoveries was third.

The win came just a day after Dettori had been beaten on Stradivarius and two horses owned by the Queen.

“She’s very special,” Dettori said. “When she broke slowly I thought here we go again, but I took a chance on the inside and got the splits.

“She’s got an engine and she got me out of trouble. It’s been a tough week, but we’re on the board now and can relax a bit.”

Royal Ascot Betting Odds

Friday’s action on a warm day at Royal Ascot kicked off with the Albany Stakes when Meditate (10/1 1000 Guineas) claimed the spoils for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Perfect Power timed his run to perfection in the 15:05 Commonwealth Cup to earn trainer Richard Fahey a second win of the meeting.

Jockey Christophe Soumillon said: “I’m sure he can be much better on softer ground so it’s good news.”

A 219-day break didn’t leave any rust on Candleford in the 3:40 Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes, beating Ajero by six lengths, while the Richard Hannon-trained Heredia landed the 1m Sandringham Stakes at 17:00.

There was further reason to celebrate for O’Brien in the 17:35 King Edward VII Stakes as Changingoftheguard (7/1 St Leger Stakes), who finished fifth at Epsom 13 days ago, gave the trainer his fourth winner of the week and 80th overall at Royal Ascot.

Friday’s meeting came to a close with Hayley Turner guiding Latin Lover to victory in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes.
