Red Bull’s Max Verstappen (EVS Drivers Championship 2022 Outright) made full use of his pole position to win Sunday’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix with teammate Sergio Perez coming home second.
The 2022 campaign has been a back and forth battle between Ferrari and Red Bull and it was the latter who enjoyed Sunday’s outing at Imola.
World champion Verstappen maximised his potential to pick up points over the weekend, winning the Sprint Race, Grand Prix and sealing the fastest lap.
The Dutchman remains second in the Drivers’ Championship but has moved within 27 points of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (EVS Drivers Championship 2022 Outright) at the summit.
Verstappen admitted that the wet conditions, which plagued the track over the weekend, were testing but he was pleased to see how the team responded.

“Today, you never know with the weather how competitive you are going to be but I think we did very well and this one-two is very deserved,” Verstappen said.
“The start was very important but afterwards, judging the conditions and when to swap to the slick tyres, because in the lead you have to always dictate the pace, and it’s always a bit more difficult initially, but everything was well managed.”
Leclerc, who started third, threw away his chances of claiming the chequered flag when trying to pass Perez at the Variante Alta chicane.
He ended up in the barriers and subsequently had to pit for a new front wing and fresh tyres but he could only recover to seal sixth place.
It capped off a frustrating day for Ferrari at their home race as Carlos Sainz failed to go beyond the opening lap after he was tipped into the gravel by McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo.
McLaren’s Lando Norris climbed from fifth to secure third spot on the podium, while George Russell was fourth for Mercedes and Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas was fifth.
It was another tough afternoon for former world champion Lewis Hamilton who finished 13th and was lapped by Verstappen.
