Cantlay feeling positive heading into weekend

Patrick Cantlay says the performance in Friday’s foursomes at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside partner Xander Schauffele has set a “really good tone” for the tournament leaders going into the final 36 holes.

Cantlay and Schauffele, who also played together at The Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup, followed up Thursday’s stunning round of 59 in the fourballs with a four-under-par 68 in Friday’s alternate shot format.

The American duo (5/4 – Outright Winner) have made just one bogey over the opening 36 holes and this has helped them climb to the top of the leaderboard on -17, one stroke ahead of Aaron Rai and David Lipsky and also the pairing of Doc Redman and Sam Ryder.

With Saturday’s play going back to fourballs, it brings with it the promise of some low scores at TPC Louisiana and Cantlay, who is 25/1 to win the USPGA Championship next month, is in a confident mood.

“It was definitely more difficult playing alternate shot,” he told the PGA Tour’s website. “I think 4 under is really good considering the circumstances with the wind and our round yesterday. I think it sets a really good tone going into the weekend.”
