Warriors urged to 'embrace expectation'

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has urged his side to “embrace the expectation” ahead of Saturday’s Betfred Challenge Cup against Huddersfield Giants at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (Giants 9/4, Wigan 4/11, Tie 20/1 – Match Winner 80 minutes).

The Warriors are the most successful club in Challenge Cup history, having lifted the trophy no less than 19 times, but Saturday will be the first final they have contested since beating Hull FC back in 2017.

Wigan produced a brilliant performance to knock out holders St Helens in the last round, edging through 20-18, and they are now preparing to take on a Huddersfield side that thrashed Hull KR 25-4 to reach this stage.

Although Peet’s men are seen as the favourites, they know all too well the challenge that the Giants present after the Warriors were beaten by Saturday’s opponents 32-22 earlier this month.

Speaking ahead of the Challenge Cup final, Peet said, as quoted by Wigan Today: “We want to play the game with no regrets, because one thing about Huddersfield is, no matter who they have got in they are very well organised who know their systems really well, and buy into it.

“We want to embrace the expectation, and you’re at the wrong club if you don’t want to. We’ve got a good set of professionals. For those 80 minutes it’s about executing the best we can and thinking clearly under pressure, making smart decisions.”

This will be just the second time these two sides have met in the Challenge Cup final, with the only previous meeting coming back in 1920 when Huddersfield won 21-10.

The Giants have won this tournament six times, the most recent of those in 1953, and they can be backed at 21/10 with Betfred to lift the trophy, while the Warriors are 1/3 favourites.

Liam Marshall starred for Wigan in the semi-final win over St Helens, bagging two tries that day, and he is 6/5 to score a try anytime and 7/1 to cross the whitewash first.
