Saturday’s US horse racing action is headlined by the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, which is due off at 23:44, while there are nine other meetings taking place too.
The 154th running of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, the feature among 13 races between 16:20 and 01:05 from the famous track later, is a test of stamina and ability over 1m4f, and is the third leg of the Triple Crown.
In today’s eagerly-awaited renewal, Todd Pletcher’s Mo Donegal is one of the main contenders at 9/4.
Pletcher has won this race three times in the past, most recently with Tapwrit in 2017, and his colt Mo Donegal appears to have been building up perfectly for this showpiece, winning a Maiden Special Weight in comfortable fashion here last autumn, before being successful in a Grade 2 over 1m1f at Aqueduct in April. He could only manage fifth in the Kentucky Derby, but he can make up for that disappointment with Grade 1 glory later with experienced jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. on board.
Other contenders in the $1,500.000 race include Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (9/2), and We The People (5/2), who has won three of his four starts to date.
