Roodee awakening .....

Chester May meeting

It’s Day One today on the historic Roodee, another welcome sign that sunnier days are well within our grasp. Love to go racing at Chester – intimate little track, gorgeous setting, cracking competition.

Wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t have a quick look and try a little Patent this afternoon, so here’s three horses to play with.

*Three single bets, three doubles, and a treble – 7 bets in total.

The Lily Agnes, for flying 5-furlong 2-yr-olds. Surprised there’s no R Hannon representative here as his string appear in fine order, but we have a very competitive-looking field nevertheless.

The all-conquering Classic-winner James Doyle is aboard Glorious Angel for Hugo Palmer, and should hopefully improve significantly for a debut at Nottingham last month.

Another blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, around the flying five. Last year’s Lily Agnes hero Navello returns to the scene of his success for this £20k to the winner handicap, and picks up top jock William Buick. George Boughey’s charge will do for me.

Stand by your beds for a confident selection (oo-er, matron – pass the smelling salts …)

Joseph O’Brien’s Above The Curve is a warm-ish order for this, the Cheshire Oaks, and can score here for Ireland. Smart winner of a Leopardstown maiden last month, she’s entered for THE Oaks, at Epsom, too. Potential victory today could see her present odds contract for the big one significantly.

*Example – £1 win Patent on the above – total stake £7.
