McIlroy returns to defend Canadian Open crown

After a pandemic forced two-year break, the RBC Canadian Open returns to Toronto this week with Rory McIlroy (9/1 Canadian Open outright) looking to defend his title from 2019.

The Northern Irishmen heads to the St. George’s Golf and Country Club as part of the PGA Tour, while the furore of the new Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series rumbles on in the background.

It’s a competitive field that heads to Ontario, with the likes of McIlroy, FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler (9/1), Players Championship winner Cameron Smith (10/1) and US PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas (10/1) all featuring.

Meanwhile, one of the home favourites Corey Conners (18/1) will be hoping the backing of the Canadian crowd can spur him on to great things at St. George’s this week.

“It’s a really special week for me… it’s right up there with the majors on my schedule,” said Conners.

“I’m looking forward to trying to get myself in contention and I know it’ll be a great event. I’ve been telling lots of people: The Canadian fans are sure going to be excited that the PGA Tour is coming back north of the border.”

With the first round getting underway on Thursday, it’s the American trio of Scott Piercy, Kevin Stadler and Harry Higgs who get the event underway with the first tee off at 7:00am local time.
