Lisowski stuns Robertson at the Crucible

Robertson in danger against Lisowski

A maximum break was not enough for Neil Robertson, as Jack Lisowski (14/1 – Outright) booked his place in the Betfred World Championship quarter-finals for the first time time with a dramatic 13-12 victory at the Crucible on Monday night.

Pre-tournament favourite Robertson produced only the 12th-ever 147 at the Crucible as he recovered from a 10-7 deficit to lead 11-10 and, at that stage, all the momentum appeared to be with the Australian.

However, Englishman Lisowski had other ideas, as he came from behind and held his nerve during a tense final frame that saw both players have chances to wrap up the victory.

“Beating the best player in the world at the moment, who is playing some of the greatest snooker we have seen, feels like a massive achievement,” Lisowski told reporters after the match.

“I knew it was going to be a close game and I felt it would go to a decider and I was ready for that. One minute I looked like I was going 11-7 up; the next minute, he’s made a maximum and it is 10-10 and my head is spinning.

“I was just throwing everything I had at him and managed to pip him at the end.”

Lisowski’s reward for reaching the last eight for the very first time will be a clash with four-time champion John Higgins, who booked his place in the quarter-finals earlier on Monday with a convincing 13-7 win over Noppon Saengkham (Lisowski 9/5, Higgins 4/9 – Match Result).

Judd Trump is also through to the last eight in Sheffield for the fifth year in a row after he withstood a spirited comeback from Anthony McGill before prevailing 13-11.

The 2019 world champion will now face another former Crucible winner in Stuart Bingham after he secured his quarter-final spot with a 13-9 victory over Kyren Wilson (Bingham 2/1, Trump 2/5 – Match Result).

The quarter-final action will get underway on Tuesday morning, with six-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan taking on the last remaining qualifier Stephen Maguire (Match Result – Maguire 18/5, O’Sullivan 1/5), while Mark Selby’s conqueror Yan Bingtao will be up against the in-form veteran Mark Williams (Bingtao 21/20, Williams 4/5 – Match Result).
