Inter up first on crucial Serie A weekend

Simone Inzaghi

Inter Milan and AC Milan’s fight for the Italian title is edging ever closer to a nail-biting finish, with the former hosting Empoli on Friday night with the chance to reclaim pole position (Inter 1/7, draw 8/1, Empoli 16/1 – Match Betting), while Genoa fight for survival against Juventus.

Defeat at the hands of Bologna on April 27 could prove costly for Simone Inzaghi’s side, robbing them of full control over their end-of-season fate.

Their bitter rivals have won three on the bounce and now hold a two-point advantage over Inter at the summit with three games to play (AC Milan 4/6, Inter 11/10 – Serie A Outright), with ninth-placed Verona – who retain only the slimmest of hopes of squeezing into the Europa Conference League berth – this Sunday’s guests at the San Siro.

Inter’s home form is Italy’s best, with 39 points racked up from 17 matches, but Empoli are not to be underestimated on the road. Despite having lost their last three away appointments at AC Milan, Fiorentina and Udinese, their away record is still among the league’s better half. Five wins and six draws from 17 outings have seen them concede only 22 goals away from Stadio Carlo Castellani, though a modest goal tally of 19 from those matches will be of solace to the Inter faithful (Under 2.5 goals – 11/4).

Midfielder Nicolo Barella’s recovery from a knee injury may have progressed sufficiently to earn him a space on the Inter bench, with a late call due to be made.

In Friday’s other fixture, relegation-threatened Genoa are hoping to cause an upset as they welcome the Old Lady, already assured of a spot in next season’s Champions League group stage, but with designs on catching a third-placed Napoli side (Genoa 3/1, draw 23/10, Juventus EVS – Match Betting).

The Red and Blues are four points from safety on the back of Salernitana’s victory over Venezia, which has seen them pull clear of the drop zone after five games without defeat.

Juve’s vastly inferior goal difference means a draw in Liguria would not be enough to temporarily displace Napoli, who are one point better off as they prepare to travel to Torino on Saturday.

Matteo De Sciglio and Juan Cuadrado remain doubts for Friday’s action for the Old Lady.
