French Open diary – Friday 27th May

Perfect build-up for Djokovic in Rome

Third-round action takes centre stage at the French Open on Friday, with plenty of big names on court after several title contenders were knocked out in round two.

Friday highlights

Novak Djokovic v Aljaz Bedene

Rafael Nadal v Botic van de Zandschulp

Alexander Zverev v Brandon Nakashima

Sebastian Korda v Carlos Alcaraz

Coco Gauff v Kaia Kanepi

Former French Open champion Simona Halep was one of the biggest casualties on Thursday as the Romanian suffered a 2-6 6-2 6-1 loss to China’s Zheng Qinwen.

Halep was hit by a panic attack midway through her encounter with Qinwen, but said after the match that she had “recovered and I will learn from this episode”.

Wimbledon runner-up Karolina Pliskova was another high-profile name to crash out in the second round, following her 6-2 6-2 defeat by French world number 227 Leolia Jeanjean.

Ninth seed Danielle Collins was also to fail in her bid to reach the third round after she lost out to fellow American Shelby Rogers 6-4 6-3.

In the men’s competition Britain’s Dan Evans was hindered by a chest infection as he suffered a 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-3 reverse at the hands of Sweden’s world number 95 Mikael Ymer.

Meanwhile, second seed Daniil Medvedev avoided a potential banana skin to beat Serbia’s Laslo Djere 6-3 6-4 6-3 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Looking ahead to Friday’s third-round matches and both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal return to court at Roland Garros.

World number one Novak Djokovic faces Aljaz Bedene, while the ‘King of Clay’ Nadal goes up against Botic van de Zandschulp.

Following some high-profile exits in round two, Coco Gauff is now at 20/1 to win the French Open and the American takes the court on Friday to face Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

Heavy title favourite Iga Swiatek (4/9 – French Open outright) has to wait until Saturday to return to action on Saturday when she faces Danka Kovinic.
